Understanding Vig and Devigging
What is Vig?
Vig (or vigorish, juice, margin) is the bookmaker's fee built into the odds. It ensures the bookmaker profits regardless of the outcome. For example, a fair coin flip should be +100 on both sides, but bookmakers typically offer -110 (1.91 decimal) on both sides.
Why Remove the Vig?
Devigged odds show the "true" probabilities and fair odds without the bookmaker's markup. This helps you identify value bets, compare different bookmakers' odds, and understand the market's actual expectations.
How Devigging Works
The devigger first converts odds to implied probabilities, which typically add up to more than 100% (the extra is the vig). It then proportionally adjusts these probabilities so they sum to exactly 100%, and converts them back to odds in your preferred format.
